The first version of the database was created by Carol L. Conolly in 2000 and released as Indiana Geological Survey Open-File Study 01-05 (Conolly, 2001). The database provided detailed location and stratigraphic information for 11,560 public point-source coal resource data in southwestern Indiana. In 2004, an updated version of the database was published. Released as Indiana Geological Survey Open-File Study 04-10 (Mastalerz and Drobniak, 2004), this updated version included all the previous data plus all of the new data as of December 2004. The database contained 11,572 data point locations and 150,827 stratigraphic layers.
Between 2004 and 2011, new data were added to the NCRDS annually. In 2012 the database and the interactive map were released as Indiana Geological Survey Report of Progress 39 (Drobniak and Mastalerz, 2012). This version of the database contained 13,722 data point locations and 190,110 stratigraphic layers.
Since 2011, thousands of new locations were added to the database. The current IGWS Coal Stratigraphic Database provides location and stratigraphic information for 19,621 public point-source coal and 205,488 stratigraphic layers.
