The Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) is a research collective housed within the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Their faculty, researchers, and students work on a range of complex and interdisciplinary problems, united by the goal to better understand and improve societal, health, and technological systems for everyone.
JHU and partners develop a new tools to predict the global spread of human infectious diseases, like dengue, measles, and the coronavirus and track them to their destination. The tool is a network model that draws on travel data from the International Air Transportation Association and dengue, measles, and coronavirus incidence rates from the Global Health Data Exchange to derive new insights about the spreading dynamics of dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, and other diseases.
The team’s findings shed light onto disease importation routes and reveal country-specific reporting rates that have been until now largely unknown. This research provides important new knowledge about the spreading dynamics of diseases that is highly beneficial for public health authorities to strategically allocate the often limited resources to more efficiently prevent the spread of such diseases.
