Even reports that the 915 MW Tricastin 3 nuclear reactor in the south of France was seen ramping up Tuesday after a month offline, with nearly 200 MW online by mid-morning. Operator EDF Tuesday announced the end of "specific management of modulation" that had seen the reactor ramping up and down since late January before going offline completely August 1.

French nuclear generation stood at 38.96 GW at 0700 CEST Tuesday morning, stable on the day and up nearly 1 GW from the last working day of August. French nuclear availability through August of 39 GW compared with 48.5 GW at the end of July.

High temperatures through most of the month triggered capacity reductions of around 1.3 GW across the fleet, up from 0.8 GW in the second half of July, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics. "These were compounded by modulation measures and maintenance revisions focused on plants under [nuclear safety regulator] ASN review," the unit said in its most recent European Electricity Monthly Outlook published August 31.

Maintenance extensions at units under ASN review are expected to continue in the months ahead with 14 GW of plant scheduled to restart in September at risk.
