Falck, and 5 co-authors (2008*) opine that uranium is a major radioactive constituent of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. However, its migration behavior in crystalline rocks is still inadequately understood. This paper describes the results of controlled laboratory migration experiments and attempts made to simulate them using numerical models. Initial models employing generic information in “blind predictions” are progressively enhanced by data-supported interpretation. Such an approach is intended to mimic the stages of a site assessment, where conceptual and numerical models are progressively refined.
[The authors of this paper sense that blind laboratory predictions of groundwater flow in crystalline rocks (aka igneous and metamorphic rocks) need refinement. They apparently have no idea that such groundwater flow must have a hydrogeological foundation to establish the subsurface conditions present before any "modeling " in the laboratory can be predicated. In 1977, a team of international geologists (the senior editor of the I2M Web Portal: MDC was a member of that international team) was formed by Professor Ingemar Larsson of the Royal Institute of Stockholm (as a UNESCO-funded project to the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to: a) investigate groundwater in such rocks around the world, which involved geological structure analysis and discussions of potential production of groundwater from such rocks, and b) to provide a team of lecturers to present their findings to assist developed and developing countries provide rural water supplies in India, Africa, and elsewhere in the world (e.g., Sardinia, Stockholm, India, Tanzania, and Brazil). The results of these travelling lecture series presented around the world over the ensuing years were captured in a UNESCO report published in 1984.
