A military-led science program in China has constructed the world's most sensitive radio telescope: the 500-Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) It is located in a remote area in the Guizhou Province nestled in the Karst Mountains. FAST is the largest radio telescope to date, surpassing the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The dish is the size of 30 football fields.
The telescope will have the collecting area of 73,000 sq. meters and can "see" more than 3 times further into space and survey the sky 10 times faster than Arecibo. Astronomers expect it to discover thousands of new galaxies and deep-sky objects up to 7 billion light years away. The facility cost about 1.2 billion Yuan (only 124 million pounds(UK).
