Abache Abreu reports that Kansai Electric's nuclear, thermal and hydro power plants had not been impacted by the strong earthquake that hit the city of Osaka in western Japan on Monday morning, the utility said. The utility, one of the world's largest LNG importers, has four nuclear reactors in operation: the Takahama No. 3 and No. 4 nuclear units with a capacity of 870 MW each, which restarted in June and May last year respectively, and the Ohi No. 3 and No. 4 with a capacity of 1,180 MW, which restarted in March and May this year, respectively.
Nuclear reactors in Japan were shut following the Fukushima accident in the wake of the 2011 quake and tsunami. Of the 39 operable reactors in Japan, eight have resumed commercial operations so far and one more is in the process of returning to commercial operations. Utilities must meet the safety requirements that Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority set following the Fukushima accident before a nuclear reactor can be restarted. They must also obtain approval from the local government.
