The Diamond Drilling Handbook has surpassed 30-year mark in printed circulation by a few years now - practically a working lifetime. I thought it may be interesting to take a look back through the years and explore what it is that has made this Handbook such an enduring publication. It continues to be the most useful core drilling industry reference, unique in content, and a great training and productivity tool. But where did it come from and what were the driving forces in the industry when the Handbook was conceived? This is part 1 (of 3 parts) looking back to that time and beyond. I hope you find it of some interest.

A Brief History of the Handbook After some 2 years of hard work, research and editing, the Diamond Drilling Handbook was brought to life. Its initial public appearance was made at the "South African Drilling Association Symposium '85". The Handbook quite literally breathed new life and surprised many people in the diamond drilling industry at the time. The author, WF Heinz, in his own words: "SADA (the South African Drilling Association) had been talking for a long time about compiling a 'drilling manual'. So I decided the handbook would be a contribution of my time as president. But the so called "handbook committee" did not really work so well. In the end I did most of the work on my own; it took me almost two years to complete the task. The written contributions were good, but not sufficient, so I had to fill in the rest and, of course, put everything together.
