Effectively managing pipeline environmental hazards (river systems, unstable slopes and earthquakes) is becoming a major focus for operators and regulators. Between 2003 and 2013, natural forces (e.g. severe weather, landslides, floods) damaged 85 pipelines resulting in failure. Collectively termed, geohazards, can represent significant risks for pipeline operators. Failures from geohazards can result in costlier spills and longer service disruptions than traditional mechanical failures.

Recently, the Pipeline Hazard Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has increased focus on managing environmental hazards to pipeline integrity. A number of Notice of Proposed Rulemakings (NPRMs) and completed rules require pipeline operators to incorporate geohazard risk assessments in their integrity management (IM) plans. This training will provide participants with a cradle to grave approach for managing pipeline geohazards. This class will use water crossings as a case study for geohazard risk assessment and preparations required for releases.

Specific Course Topics Include: Risk Identification and Management for River Crossings Monitoring River Crossings: Traditional versus Modern Technology Planning for a release: Ensuring you are ready Mitigating Releases on Water Crossings
