Dr. Conca reports that the U.S. Energy Secretary, Rick Perry, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to regulate pricing so that coal and nuclear power plants that keep at least 90 days of fuel supply on site can recoup their full costs. Said Perry, ‘The continued closure of traditional baseload power plants calls for a comprehensive strategy for long-term reliability and resilience.’ The oil and gas industry, along with renewable energy groups and environmentalists, immediately attacked.
They think that any such incentives are unfair and could lead to an increase in emissions from coal plants linked to global warming (which is probable) and more toxic waste from nuclear plants before a permanent repository is built for the country (which is incorrect). This is an unlikely coalition of fossil and renewable concerns. Natural gas producers are planning on becoming the major source of energy for America in this century and have been using renewables to help entrench themselves as an essential energy source.
