Resource thumbnail William Gloege, a world explorer, responds to a recent editorial referring to waste from nuclear plants, wherein the editorial calls them lethal and deadly. One would expect to find a lot of dead bodies and sick people from lethal, deadly nuclear waste as we see from burning fossil fuel. These are typical scare terms used by nuclear adversaries. But the fact is we have not found one single injury or fatality from nuclear waste. All we have is a mantra from anti-nuclear activists (typically left-wing tribal supporters) against the possibility of someday stored reactor waste hurting its first victim. We cannot go by the imaginings of nuclear opponents alone. Alarmists have imagined there were no actual moon landings and 9/11 was not caused by terrorists. Someone imagination is not the actual evidence we need. However, he suggest that all problems need to be set in context with other industrial waste. Nuclear power is one means of giving California and the world the energy modern societies demand for homes, businesses, industry, transportation, etc. By far we get our American energy from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, approximately 66.5%. The waste from fossil fuel produces smoke, soot, ozone and other harmful waste products that kill 200,000 Americans and 3 million worldwide yearly. Worse, burning fossil fuel produces CO2 that heats our planet and can eventually impact all life on Earth, including humans, say top scientists like James Hansen, formerly the top climate scientist at NASA and now a professor at Columbia University in New York, and UK James Lovelock, resolver of the ozone crisis. Experience points to zero victims of stored nuclear materials and waste, which may be used in the future. The endless scary warnings are propaganda to generate new members for anti-nuclear groups. Shouldn't the selection of energy be based on 1) the environmental impact, and 2) the economics (price of electricity generated)? Not by NIMBY citizens!
