Herkewitz emphasizes the importance of Severnini research on why coal-fired power plants should not replace nuclear plants. Severnini also argues that his research is all the more reason not just to move to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, but to readopt nuclear power generation as quickly as possible.
Although incidents like the Three Mile Island accident or the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011 generated unfounded, but deep public anxiety and uncertainty about the future of nuclear energy (mostly created by the fear-mongering media since no one was killed or irradiated in either incidents), his study concluded that nuclear plants produce virtually no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants during power generation, which is nothing new but still important to emphasize.
Herkewitz opines that the technology is available to entirely eliminate coal power plants with nuclear right now and have for quite a while. This is in contrast to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which would not currently be able to replace the electricity we would lose from entirely excising coal from our national grid.
