Resource thumbnail Wallace McKelvey, in a not-so-subtle, biased article opines that nuclear power, which generates more than 30% of Pennsylvania electricity, could soon disappear from the state amid a glut of cheap natural gas from the Marcellus Shale play. And the first of 5 Pennsylvania plants to close could be the Three Mile Island facility, as soon as 2019. Yes, Three Mile Island nuclear power plant has been operating since the 1970s. TMI owner Exelon is seeking the PA Legislature help to keep marginally economic reactors like TMI open. The same argument is being made in other states as well, Illinois and New York both moved to protect nuclear plants in the last year from temporarily cheap natural gas. In turn, the gas lobby and other adversarial groups have ramped up efforts to thwart a bailout of the nuclear industry that they claim would lead to electric rate hikes, albeit temporary. Pennsylvania lawmakers from both chambers and both parties formed a nuclear caucus with the goal of crafting a proposal to rescue the industry this fall. For their part, caucus leaders say they are not interested in bailouts or subsidies. They have to look at what other states have done, said Sen. Ryan Aument because he is not committed to any specific proposal at this point, just what would fit the objective, economically in the long term. notice language used, i.e., very faint praise, etc.
