Frank Mercado reports that geothermal energy is trending upwards in 2017, especially for Indonesia which has set frameworks in place and target goals of geothermal development to be achieved in the coming years, providing a significant portion of electricity so equipment and technology providers for geothermal power would need to lay keen eyes on these following developments to effectively ride on the market trends that will drive growth this year. Indonesian Government is preparing to move to a fixed-price feed-in-tariff in an effort to accelerate geothermal development.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry is also working on cutting down the time of geothermal permitting to a process that could only take three hours, a similar process already in place for other industries. One of the things that has been a hindrance in development has been the lengthy process of getting necessary business permits. The government has now announced changes to the permitting system, that would streamline the process and help make things easier for investors. Under a new regulation by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, the geothermal industry would be entitled to priority investment services and investors can obtain necessary permits within three hours at the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), a privilege already in existence for other industries.

This would speed up various permit process helping to make things more business friendly. Geothermal investors are also entitled to the one-stop service at the board, according to The Jakarta Post, in which documents like the geothermal business license and temporary electricity supply permit can be completed without visiting other related institutions. BKPM director of agribusiness and natural resources investment planning Hanung Harimba Rachman said the board in cooperation with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry was seeking to further streamline doing business in the sector.
