Resource thumbnail Colter Anstaett reports that in 1980s, a 119-million-pound, world class uranium deposit, the largest in the U.S., was discovered near Coles Road in Chatham, Virginia. Soon after, the state of Virginia responded to adversaries to the mining project and imposed a statewide uranium mining ban, which remains in effect today. Ever since the ban was implemented, efforts have been made to get it lifted so that the uranium can be mined with significant benefit to the local economy, the local nuclear power plants, and from taxes, with no safety issues. The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond upheld the decision to throw out the latest lawsuit in the case. Welcome news for adversaries like Lester Terry Jr., who is opposed to the mining, claiming uranium is radioactive, hazardous and mining it would upset the ecological environment. (WP indicates these claims are ludicrous and without foundation. It represents ignorance of reality). The circuit court agreed that federal law, specifically the Atomic Energy Act, does not preempt the state ban and therefore the lawsuit by Virginia Uranium, Inc. claiming that it does, was correctly thrown out in 2015 by the District Court for the Western District of Virginia and subsequently appealed (WP, True) Terry Jr. said another roadblock for uranium mining in the county is a win for both current and future county residents claiming it would affect their health, their future generations, their churches and Terry lives nearby. (WP also indicates that the Terry position is biased on economic grounds...he lives nearby. Citing future generations and churches represent astounding ignorance). Uranium is highly radioactive (but it is NOT), which is why he and others are concerned about being exposed to it if mined. (but, no basis for fear of radioactivity). Example of royalty envy?
