Dr. Conca reports that SMR Start is a new organization of potential customers and vendors investing in the development of advanced modular reactors (SMRs), formed to get SMRs over the initial market humps plaguing all new technologies, by using proven public-private partnerships. SMRs offer what the industry has always wanted ... an economic, flexible, shippable reactor that cannot meltdown. SMRs can be emplaced singly or in series.
Modules can be added later, likely at current power transformer stations in cities and towns. This provides flexibility and planning not possible for larger plants, and also allows complete buffering, or load-following, of intermittent sources like wind and solar. Because of their relatively small size, 300 MW or less, SMRs are economic, factory built and shippable, flexible enough to desalinate, refine oil, load-follow wind, produce hydrogen and provide power in remote areas, off-world, or even after disasters.
