Dr. Conca reports that while everyone has been fixated on Perry shifting DOE away from renewable energy and toward the fossil fuels that he championed during his fourteen years as Governor of Texas, Perry has been busy coming up to speed during the Transition. He now appears to appreciate the DOE role in science, nuclear and global affairs. This is a good thing, since most of the DOE $30 billion budget goes to maintaining and refurbishing the U.S. nuclear stockpile, impeding global nuclear proliferation, cleaning up nuclear waste, rebuilding our aging nuclear infrastructure, and overseeing the crown jewels of government science, our National Laboratories. Perry has more experience with nuclear than one would think, having attempted to triple nuclear power in Texas and to open a nuclear waste repository in his home state when he was Governor. Texas is also the home of the Pantex Facility in Amarillo, an important part of the DOE nuclear weapons complex. Perry also acknowledged that humans have had a role in climate change, mirroring many of the Trump nominees who seem to be weakly bucking the new President statement that global warming is a Chinese hoax.
