Matt Williams opines that the public goal stated by NASA, ESA, the Russians, the Chinese, India, etc., etc. for obtaining samples from the Moon is about understanding the chronology of the Moon. The timescale we have developed for the Moon are anchored in the Apollo samples. The next Moon samples will attempt to sample other time periods so we can determine if our time scales are correct.
However, the actual objective of exploration on the Moon, Mars, and the asteroids is to lay the foundation for developing natural resources offworld and for leaning how to go about colonization of all three.
It is very important that well-trained professional geologists are involved in all offworld programs, which will also require a large contingent of Earth-based geologists as well to work on planning, mapping, and sample evaluations, etc. Dr. Jack Schmitt (Apollo 17), the only actual geologist ever having stepped foot onto the surface of the Moon, should be named Chief Geologist overseeing all of the exploration on all three targets.
.
Clearly, it is a good time to be a geologist, as their expertise will be called upon for future missions to space as the principal scientist leading the way for generation to come.
