The U.K. plans to invest in new nuclear power following the France lead, but breaking ranks with Germany and the big Green pressure groups.
The U.K. Department of Energy & Climate Change published this infographic, but then took it down. Businesses reaping billions in subsidies from solar and wind deemed it unhelpful.
The facts according to the U.K. government?
Acres required to power 6 million homes:
Wind 250,000 acres
Solar 130,000 acres
Nuclear 430 acres (in construction)...160 acres in operation.
The Daily Telegraph calls it the infographic the U.K. government does not want you to see. The U.K. should not only want you to see this, it should add in coal and gas as well to the areas occupied. As indicated above, it is worth emphasizing what others have pointed out that the 430 acres include that used while building the plant, when complete the Hinkley Point footprint will fall to 160 acres, and that solar subsidies are 90 cents per kilowatt-hour and cost $1.72 per kilowatt-hour. Nuclear and Coal pay for themselves. Nuclear is the cheapest form of energy generation we have and protects the environment by producing almost zero gases of concern.
On-site storage of nuclear waste is not a problem. Just consider the 1000s of tanks filed with gasoline and other ignitables that industry store for the most part for years and safely. But they do explode and burn....from time to time. When was the last time a nuclear plant had a meltdown? In Japan...but no one died and no one was even irradiated.
