Geert De Clercq reports that the Sweden plan to keep nuclear energy as part of its low-carbon energy mix is a major boost for the nuclear industry, the head of French utility EDF said on Tuesday. In a broad deal agreed with the main opposition parties, the Swedish government said last week it would phase out some taxes on nuclear power and allow up to 10 new nuclear reactors to be built as the country closes its old plants.
The Sweden support for nuclear is major news for the nuclear industry following Fukushima, EDF Chief Executive Officer Jean-Bernard Levy said at a seminar in Paris. EDF is the world largest operator of nuclear plants, running 58 reactors which provide about 75% of France's electricity.
