The company was named Reliant Energy, Inc. In 2002, with the restructuring of the electric market in Texas, the company spun off its retail electric as Reliant Resources. Within two years, the company would also sell its electric generation assets. The remaining mostly regulated energy delivery company adopted the name CenterPoint Energy to reflect our role in the center of the energy value chain and the center of our customers lives.
CPE now maintain the wires, poles and electric infrastructure serving their 5,000-square-mile electric service territory in the Houston metropolitan area. While our employees ensure the reliable delivery of power from power plants to homes and businesses, we neither generate power nor sell it to customers. We sell and deliver natural gas to 3.2 million homes and businesses in Arkansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas, including the high-growth areas of Houston and Minneapolis.
