Resource thumbnail Andrews-based nuclear waste storage firm Waste Control Specialists is scheduled to make a formal announcement Thursday regarding its plans to operate an interim consolidated storage facility. The company sent a news release today announcing that it plans to seek a license for the facility from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It would be the first interim storage facility, according to the news release in the U.S., and would store used nuclear fuel, a byproduct of the electrical generation process at nuclear energy facilities. Waste Control Specialists started as a low-level radioactive waste facility, and the new license would allow them to store high-level radioactive waste or spent nuclear fuel.
