Smart, et al., (1976) reports that there have been many major phases in the history of exploration for uranium in Australia. In the early 1950s the Rum Jungle and South Alligator River valley uranium fields were discovered. The Rum Jungle deposits were mined between 1953 and 1963 and the South Alligator River valley deposits were mined between 1954 and 1964. During this period most exploration was directed towards the country between the two areas, out little attention was given to the area east of the South Alligator River.
The region was, however, mapped in reconnaissance style at 1:250 000 scale by the Bureau of Mineral Resource (BMR) in the late 1950s. Interest in (the area east of the South Alligator River developed in 1969 after apparent analogies between the geology of this area and that at Rum Jungle were noted from the BMR 1:500 000 scale map of the Katherine-Darwin Region. Intensive exploration of the region for uranium and base metals has continued to the present (1973). Nothing has been published on the geology of this area since 1968.
