A proposed 2016 study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will examine whether excessive wear on work boots can sometimes lead to slips, trips and falls (STFs) at mining facilities. The study will attempt to identify changes in tread (wear) on the outsoles of work boots, in order to develop guidelines for boot replacement.
While it is common practice for mining companies to replace footwear at a pre-determined interval or based on appearance and comfort, there has never been much data on how the actual condition of the outsoles relates to the likelihood of an STF incident.
The results of the NIOSH study will be used to provide miners and mine managers with knowledge on the following ...
1. How quickly the outsoles on work boots wear out,
2. What sorts of wear occur, and
3. How wear patterns influence the likelihood of an STF.
Once completed, the main goal of the study will be to reduce the risks of STF accidents at surface mine facilities. To learn more about how to avoid slips, trips and falls while working on the job, you can review, print and share this CORESafety infographic with your employees ...
