How familiar are you with the safety and health management system at your mining company?
A successful system starts by establishing a benchmark, a full understanding of past accidents and fatalities, and the measures you have committed to taking in order to prevent them in the future.
Frank Hanagarne, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Coeur Mining, Inc., believes continuous safety improvement requires companies to set a benchmark and regularly discuss how to improve it. The CORESafety structure is designed to enable us to audit our performance or have that done by a third party, so we always have the benchmark of where we are at today, and that leads into the discussion of how do we improve upon that, Hanagarne said.
Hanagarne believes that CORESafety has made a measurable difference in Coeur safety performance since the initiative was put into place in 2011. It is quite similar to most management system approaches that you would find, but has the benefit of not being as bureaucratic or paperwork-driven as some other systems, he elaborated. I would maintain that because of this, it is more effective.
