Henry Ledyard opines that some of these rare earth companies will be lottery tickets (small entry price with potential for high returns but also high risk) while others may collapse due to collapsing materials price. If China raises the price of rare earth materials, then these companies will do very well. However, do not expect that to happen soon as lower China industrial demand is causing prices to drop. Prices are 10% to 20% of their peak prices.
Ledyard includes links to the many rare earth explorers/miners -
Molycorp USA (rare earth miner) - MCPIQ (Previously MCP)
Molycorp was the USA rare earth miner, until they declared bankruptcy in 2015. Currently, they are involved in a restructuring which may eventually get the company back to mining. Their plan to expand into manufacturing did not go well. If prices of rare earths move higher, or china restricts demand, then expect there to be a big influx of money into Molycorp shares. At current share price levels, Molycorp is a nice buyout target for tech companies wanting access to raw materials (like Tesla).
Molycorp provided a strategic asset to the USA to hedge against a Chinese monopoly. The USA government also instituted a rare earth strategic reserve, which they think should cover their military and system critical rare earth demands. As such, they do not have plans to bail out Molycorp. If China makes a move on rare earths, the business news cycle may have enough citizen fear to encourage the USA to offer a strategic bail out, citing military necessity.
Lynas Corporation AU (rare earth miner) - LYC.ax or LYSCF or LYSDY
Australian based miner Lynas Corp is the only current miner in competition with China. Fears of China miner collapse and industry shakeups have caused Lynas share prices to rise in recent days. Long term, the company seems sound. It continues to produce rare earths. Recently a lawsuit against its Malaysian operation was dropped, leading to a share price increase.
