The number of slip or fall accidents in mining companies has seen an increase in 2015, according to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics. Slips or falls have accounted for 21% of all reportable accidents during the first six months of this year, up from 20.5% in 2014.
Two of the biggest reasons for these injuries:
- Working conditions at mines, such as uneven walking surfaces, loose materials and bad weather; and
- Occasional lapses of attention by miners while on the job.
It is important to remind employees about these six tips to avoid slips and falls.
- Maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or one hand and two feet) while climbing on or off ladders or other structures.
- Maintain traction‚ keep boots free from dirt, oil and grease.
- Wear fall protection gear when appropriate.
- Watch where you‚ re walking.
- Be attentive and keep your mind on your job.
- Keep work areas free from debris.
