Resource thumbnail John Perez Graphics and Design just released a trailer of their new animation.... Life Cycle of an Oil Well. It is a comprehensive overview of the process of drilling an oil well. The animation takes the viewer through 21 important steps from planning to reclamation. Months of project research, artwork, 3D modeling and animation have been spent to provide an excellent oilfield educational tool that is easy for the layperson to understand. Whether it is to show to employees, clients, investors, students, a jury or civic groups, this animation allows the viewer to gain a great deal of valuable information about oil well drilling and development in a short period of time. The animation is outstanding. The only criticism is that they do not include an accurate view of the groundwater system. There is no indication of a water table, which is the top of the groundwater reservoir that extends saturation deep into the crust. Only highly permeable zones occurring within sands (in the Gulf Coast at least) can be called aquifers. But even shales and limestones are under saturated conditions although their permeabilities are generally low, except for the faults and joints present that often pass through such rock units creating flowpaths for groundwater migration. The animation shows and implies that only a thin zone contains potable groundwater, which is misleading since there are likely numerous sands in the section shown in the animation trailer that contains groundwater of possible use.
