A FIELD ALERT - Geologist Dies in Gun Attack on Peruvian Mining Camp

In 2003, five masked gunmen attacked a Canadian mining-exploration camp in the Andes Mountains, killing a Peruvian geologist, wounding another and stealing radio equipment and satellite telephones, police said Wednesday. The night raid - and two other incidents involving Shining Path guerrillas that also were reported by police on Wednesday - indicate that a recent guerrilla resurgence is spreading southward across Peru's Ayacucho region.
