Resource thumbnail The competency of miners can be verified in a variety of ways, and behavioral observation is especially important. For example, watching how a worker is performing a job and then meeting with the worker to identify issues that might ultimately result in a safety hazard. But observation and dialogue alone are not enough. Training is integral to the success of reaching the CORESafety goal of 0:50 to 5. Mining companies should always - 1. Assess the training needs of their workers based on level, knowledge and skills required for each task. 2. Ensure workers know how to do their jobs. 3. Ensure workers know the hazards and risks they may face in their assigned tasks. 4. Verify worker competency through demonstrations. One example in which mining employees need significant training and competency is when they are working in situations where height is a factor. In these cases, employees must always follow company procedures and utilize fall protection equipment to prevent or minimize accidents due to falls. CoreSafety has included these Fall Protection Guidelines to help you better understand the responsibilities, procedures, inspections, and training requirements often associated with working at heights. Module 5 of the CORESafety Handbook offers more information on Training and Competency: Working at Heights and Fall Protection.
