The Richmond Times-Express editors opine that to the obvious disappointment of anti-nuclear forces, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has given Dominion North Anna plant a clean bill of health. The commission undertook the physical after Beyond Nuclear raised concerns in the wake of an earthquake that was felt up and down the East Coast. North Anna was near the center of the event but suffered hardly a scratch.
After a thorough review, the NRC has concluded none of the concerns the group raised is valid. A Beyond Nuclear factotum chastised the agency for ignoring claimed growing concerns. Growing? When your raison d etre is to alarm people about the supposed dangers of nuclear power, you probably can not ever admit concerns might do otherwise. Even when they do.
Nuclear power carries risks and imposes trade-offs, just like any energy source not fueled by wishful thinking and fairy dust. But it is one of the most reliable and efficient means of generating electricity at an industrial scale, and it does so in a carbon-free manner, all of which helps explain why some formerly anti-nuke so-called environmentalists (aka adversaries) have made their peace with it.
The North Anna plant has been tested now by earthquake and by agency. Those who live nearby can sleep peacefully knowing the plant is not only carbon-free, but safe.
