Dr. Conca opines that Donald Trump says that he would love to have the strength of Sarah Palin in my administration. And it just so happens that Sarah Palin wants to be Secretary of Energy. She said she thinks a lot about the Department of Energy because energy is my baby. Oil, gas, minerals, those things God has dumped on this part of the earth for mankind use instead of us relying on unfriendly foreign nations for us to import their resources (from CNN).
Conca says that Palin may be forgiven for not knowing that the U.S. no longer imports much fuel from any unfriendly foreign nations anymore, since the U.S. now produces so much oil and gas. Unless she is referring to Canada as unfriendly foreigners - the U.S. imports more from Canada than all those other unfriendly foreigners combined.
But it is really interesting that Palin thinks the DOE has much to do with energy, like those mineral things. She said that if she were in charge of that, it would be a short-term job, but it would be really great to have someone who knows energy and is pro-responsible development to be in charge (from The Guardian).
Said Palin said that if she were head of [DOE], she would get rid of it. She would let the states start having more control over the lands that are within their boundaries and the people that are affected by the developments within their states. Sure, the states have lots of nuclear experts on their payroll that would just love to take over these nuclear things.
Conca says that these statements are kind of funny to a scientist but also kind of scary since, theoretically, it could happen. By the way, the DOE is hardly about energy at all, at least not in the electricity sense. DOE is all about nuclear - nuclear weapons and nuclear waste. Only a little bit of energy and mainly as research, not production. And nuclear is one of those things that you actually need to know well, or you will do stupid things.
