Valerie Bragg reports that so-called environmental (aka adversarial) organizations want to join with the state in the Virginia Uranium, Incorporated lawsuit. Earlier, Virginia Uranium filed a suit against the Commonwealth last month to have the ban lifted. A representative of the adversarial group called the Roanoke River Basin Association tells ABC 13 that they and another adversarial group called the Dan River Basin Association have filed a motion to intervene in court, which means they want to join the state in the lawsuit and act as an ally. They also said they filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The impact that uranium mining could have locally is why the group says they want to step up with the state and help fight it, but they have no basis for their claims of imminent danger to water or air, just opposition. They claim that anything that might threaten them, or that threatens our citizens, our drinking water, for our industry, for our farming, for our recreation all of which are legs we stand on economically, said Andrew Lester, Executive Director of the Roanoke River Basin Association. So mining, uranium mining does not fit into that scheme of things, he says with a straight face but likely with tongue in cheek when they finally realize the project would be good for business and safe for the groundwater and surface water.
The judge still has to rule whether they will allow The Roanoke River Basin Association and Dan River Basin Association to join the Commonwealth. The first hearing in the case is set for November 6th in Danville federal court. Sounds like a vocal typical adversarial minority in the area is at it again. This only fill the pockets of the attorneys, both sides.
