Resource thumbnail You should know that the Nova producers or writers failed to say that no one died or exhibited radiation sickness as a result of the damage at Fukushima and other nuclear power plants along the Japanese coast caused by multiple earthquakes and tsunamis. The dreaded term, meltdown, was used but it turned out that the plant operators were able to manage the issues without one loss of life. After a week or two all 10 reactors along the coast were safely shut down. The disaster can only be related to those who died as a result of the tsunamis. Nova producers pandered to public fear buy relating the separate issues as one disaster, which is not true. Notice how the narrator constantly introduces fear-mongering terms and his use of could, but it never was, terms such as unimaginable, toxic mess, towns without people, shame of operators (who did an outstanding job), stating miliseverts that were well below radiation concern - except in the immediate area of the fuel rods. This go around, media failed to panic the general public into foregoing nuclear power even though a few countries were stampeded, such as Germany and Japan who began the process of shutting down their plants. Just such a media effort once did have an impact during and after the Three-Mile Island incident, which was 1,000 times of less impact. The eyewitness accounts and investigation of the nuclear crisis were exaggerated and inflated by NOVA producers, no doubt. People fears were exploited via the personal stories from Japan that illustrated how people react when facing a life-threatening disaster caused by the tsunamis and then compounded by the fear of radiation spread throughout Japan after hearing meltdown on the news media. The media did a number on the public during the Three-Mile Island incident, but not this time. People have a more informed perspective on the subject these days. Now the safety systems were checked and improved. Japan is starting up their reactors once again.
