Japan has seen its uranium demand drop drastically since 2011. The country was turning more towards renewables for its electricity generation but the costs involved became excessive. The large number of islands spell out something significant for the Japan power situation. Shipping oil or running power lines to all of these different islands is quite expensive. Spread out nuclear reactors would allow relatively cheap long term power generation on these islands. The first thing to talk about is Japan current nuclear power plant situation. A map shows the locations of the nuclear power plants in Japan.

The country has power plants spread out over the largest islands with 52 functioning power plants outputting an impressive 45.742 gigawatts. The country gets a large amount of its energy from nuclear power and remains one of the largest producers of nuclear power on a worldwide scale. In 2011, before the damage to Japan nuclear power plants, Japan was the fourth largest nuclear electricity generator in the world tied with Russia and South Korea. France used twice as much nuclear electricity and the United States four times as much. With increasing demand for nuclear power, Japan once again has the opportunity to rise to above where it previously was. Such a rise would result in greatly increased uranium demand.
