Gov. Brian Sandoval and the DOE reached an agreement Monday clearing a way for radioactive uranium waste to be trucked into Nevada and buried in a landfill at the DOE national security reservation, officials have confirmed. 403 canisters of uranium-233 commingled with uranium-235, and containing other byproducts. The material had been stored for decades in a warehouse at the Savannah River facility. The uranium waste is not as hot as the high level spent nuclear fuel destined for currently-mothballed Yucca Mountain site. But even though it was classified as low level, it is debris normally buried at the Region 5 landfill in the southeast segment of facility. The waste canisters have heavy shielding and are handled by remote-handle cranes, which is not unusual for such material. Editor Note: Notice not so veiled anti-nuclear title.
