Resource thumbnail Dr. Conca reports that the ironically-named Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) put out another report that is not worth the paper it is printed on. The report, subcontracted to McCullough Research, claims that shutting down the Columbia Generating Station commercial nuclear power plant in Richland, Washington, and replacing it with a natural gas-fired power plant, could save rate-payers 1.7 billion US dollars over 17 years But it really does not show that. The only finding of this report is - wait for it - fracking for natural gas really changed things in the energy markets. This is not news. But the report assumption that natural gas prices will stay at about 3 US dollars per mmbtu over 20 years is news. Totally wrong, of course, but newsworthy. And the conclusions in this report hinge completely on natural gas prices staying this low for the next 20 years.
