The State Government is set to begin accepting applications for uranium mining in Queensland, promising the substance will be exported via existing ports in Darwin and South Australia and only to nations that have a bilateral safeguard arrangement with Australia and only for peaceful purposes. It has also announced plans to open the abandoned Mary Kathleen Mine, shut since 1982, for competitive tender, saying the move will unlock significant deposits of rare earth elements. It comes as the Newman Government releases its uranium mining framework and calls for applications to mine the substance in Queensland.
