EPA 542-R-04-013 Emergency Response June 2004 Electrical systems that can be deployed at a landfill that has already been constructed apply an electrical potential across the non-conductive geomembrane liner to look for conductive leaks. Though generally used as a quality assurance method for leak detection in newly constructed landfill liners, these systems have been applied with some success to operating units. Systems of this type can easily be used to periodically monitor operating surface impoundments, and there is a well-established commercial vendor sector offering this service.
