Low-permeability sands hold the largest financial promise of all the usual suspects in the unconventional gas lineup. Industry studies rank it at almost 70 percent of unconventional U.S. gas production and 20 percent of total domestic production.
With advances in technology and the new strategic application of existing technology, tight sands plays are driving exploration and drilling activity in several basins. And it could not have come at a better time. With the U.S. Energy Information Administration projecting natural gas demand to incrementally grow by 40 percent over the next two decades, unconventional gas sources such as the tight sands that blanket the Southwest, Mid-Continent and Northeast are expected to play a major role in fulfilling demand requirements.
