At a U.S. EPA sponsored meeting of over sixty "ASR experts" in Chicago, (May 2009), there was discussion of many issues related to aquifer recharge. With increasing water demands and finite supply sources, water managers and utility operators nationwide are pursuing aquifer storage as an effective means to ensure supply to citizens and communities. There are currently over 95 active ASR projects in the US involving over 500 wells. In addition to the recharge of aquifers via wells, there are many projects that use surface spreading to increase infiltration to aquifers. Enhancing sub-surface storage has considerable economic, environmental and operational advantages over surface storage options.
