The GeoCommunicator of the Bureau of Land Management focused on communication, data, and activities of interest to anyone involved in or interested in the management of lands within the US. GeoCommunicator is the Bureau of Land Management's publication site for the distribution of geospatial data and products to the public. GeoCommunicator provides free interactive mapping, map streaming services (ArcIMS (image and feature), WMS, ArcGIS (REST, SOAP, KML), web data services for online products or user developed products including GeoCoder (converting latitude and longitude -> land description and vice versa), Find LD (pass a land description and have the spatial description returned), Derive LD (pass the spatial component and have the land description returned, and Survey Exporter (pass the township have the coordinates returned). Additionally, users can save the map as a URL link with the selected layers, extent, and highlighted information.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has determined the need to change the services and data provided from the GeoCommunicator website.  Some services and information previously provided will no longer be hosted by GeoCommunicator, however, might still be obtained from the respective BLM State Offices governing the subject lands or area.  You are encouraged to either visit the websites or to contact the appropriate data manager or administrator from the list for further information or availability.

On February 25, 2011 the BLM removed most of the data layers from the GeoCommunicator map viewers. This includes the removal of all of the BLM land and mineral information coming from LR2000 including oil and gas leases and agreements, coal leases, oil shale leases, renewable energy, rights-of-way, unpatented mining claims, land patents, withdrawal, land disposals, exchanges, etc. as well as the non-BLM federal surface management agency data (USFS lands, non-federal lands, state lands, other agency lands). Data that is not managed by the BLM was also removed from the map viewers.

On May 23, 2011 the BLM removed the map services (ArcIMS- image and feature, ArcGIS, and WMS) associated with the removed data themes as described above. The following data layers and information are still available through the interactive map viewer, the map streaming services, and for use in the web services:

Public Land Survey data (viewable and downloadable), Oil and Gas Sale Parcels, Solar Study Zones, Designated 368 Energy Corridors (on BLM lands), BLM Lands (including Bankhead Jones, Conservation Areas, National Monuments, Wilderness), BLM Administrative Areas, BLM Range Allotments/Pastures, BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas and Herd Management Areas, and BLM Abandoned Mines as well as reference themes and base maps.

All web services GeoCoder, Find Land Description (LD), Derive Land Description (LD), and Survey Exporter are still available.

As approved datasets become available they will be republished on GeoCommunicator.
