Most people think of this picturesque archipelago as a peaceful paradise, but scientists warn it could be the epicenter of one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history. But what if a massive section of the island of La Palma suddenly collapsed into the sea? And, if that triggered a megaquake so powerful, it sent a towering tsunami racing toward the shores of Africa, Europe, and the Americas?

This is a scenario backed by decades of geophysical research, volcanic monitoring, and seismic modeling. Could a single geological event in the Canary Islands cripple the entire Atlantic basin? Possibly. The wave(s) would take 5 or 6 hours to reach the Atlantic coastline, plenty of time for humans to get to higher ground or some distance away from the coast.

This was not the first alert on the potential hazards coming from a possible island collapse and following tsunami.
