De Carlo and two co-authors reported in 2003 that extensive geochemical literature on the transport and fate of trace elements has demonstrated that their fate is often linked with that of Fe and Mn oxides. Although this process has been observed in various biogeochemical regimes (e.g., sediment columns, the Black Sea, lakes, etc.), it is often difficult to determine the exact mechanisms of trace metal cycling owing to the complexity of these natural systems.

The rare earth elements (REE) provide unique insights into the processes controlling trace metal uptake and release and depth profiles of REE in these lakes are used to elucidate the controlling mechanisms for trace metal cycling.
