Prof Poliakoff presented a video on promethium. Outstanding!

Promethium was the last rare earth element of the lanthanide series to be discovered. The pure metal has a silvery appearance. Salts of promethium glow pale blue or green, due to radioactive decay. Promethium has a double hexagonal close packed (dhcp) structure and a hardness of 63 kg/mm2.

A little promethium is used in specialised atomic batteries. These are roughly the size of a drawing pin and are used for pacemakers, guided missiles and radios.

Common use:

Promethium is useful as a beta source for thickness gauges.

Most of the element is used only for research purposes, except for promethium-147, which can be found outside laboratories.

These are roughly the size of a drawing pin and are used for pacemakers, guided missiles and radios.
