Hewson, and 5 co-authors, reported in 2015 that this study evaluated the geological mapping potential of the recently released Australian CSIRO-GA ASTER satellite geoscience products in providing mineral abundance and compositional information. A range of environments was examined by using test sites including the temperate cultivated New South Wales area of Wagga Wagga, and the semi-arid rangeland Mt Fitton of South Australia. Data integration of the ASTER derived products was undertaken with geophysical data, digital elevation models and fractional vegetation cover information.
The study demonstrated that these products can successfully assist geological mapping within semi-arid areas and, to a lesser extent, within temperate open woodland environments. This study demonstrated, within the test site areas of Mt Fitton and Wagga Wagga, the usefulness of the recently released Australia ASTER map products supplied by CSIRO and GA for identifying or discriminating variations in surface geological composition. These map products included the content and composition of mineral groups within outcropping geological units, possible overprinted alteration and weathered regolith.
In particular, many stratigraphic units and areas of mineralised alteration were effectively mapped by the ASTER map products within the Mt Fitton test site. Overall the ASTER map products can potentially aid mineral exploration in Australia within semiarid areas such as Mt Fitton and, to a lesser extent, within open woodland and cultivated environments such as Wagga Wagga.
