[WNA reported in early 2021 that Germany is actually going to shut down all of it's nuclear power plants. How such stupidity could grip the politics in Germany is not unknown in the U.S. for it strange politics these days, as if a large segment of the human population gets a fascist-mind virus like in Germany in the late 1930s and in the U.S. over the past 5 years and counting.]

  • Germany until March 2011 obtained one-quarter of its electricity from nuclear energy, using 17 reactors. The figure is now about 10% from six reactors, while 35-40% of electricity comes from coal, the majority of that from lignite [a high-ash version of coal and now from Russian natural gas (more)].

  • A coalition government formed after the 1998 federal elections had the phasing out of nuclear energy as a feature of its policy. With a new government in 2009, the phase-out was cancelled, but then reintroduced in 2011, with eight reactors shut down immediately. [Many citizens are still suffering under the fear of radiation from the Chernobyl accident, but there is no basis for such fear (more)].

  • Public opinion in Germany remains broadly opposed to nuclear power with virtually no support for building new nuclear plants, [but recent polls indicate this is changing].

  • Germany had some of the lowest wholesale electricity prices in Europe and some of the highest retail prices, due to its positive energy policies. Taxes and surcharges account for more than half the domestic electricity price.
