The American Nuclear Society and it's Center for Nuclear Science and Technology Information makes the complex nuclear world easier to understand for the general public. The ANS members encourage and inspire fun in nuclear education for K-12 students. Most of all, the ANS helps people learn the many benefits that nuclear science and technology brings to their lives – from their health to their safety and many conveniences in their everyday lives. Who Funds the ANS?
Companies and individuals both inside and outside the nuclear field make it possible for the Center to provide credible, trustworthy information for those seeking to better understand how nuclear science and technology impact the quality of their lives. Nuclear science and technology faces many challenges, from public education and acceptance, to regulation and funding. Beginning a conversation about nuclear topics is not always easy. Whether from a podium or over a cup of coffee, talking about complex nuclear issues requires preparation, and an understanding that the general public may not grasp – or care about – the fine details. The resources in this section provide relevant information and simple facts, that will help everyone from nuclear scientists to educators and other advocates prepare for thoughtful discussions.
[A Note from the I2M Web Portal Editors: The general public carries many misunderstandings about nuclear power, some of which are distributed as known falsehoods by anti-nuclear and anti-uranium mining groups promoting wind, solar, and and even natural gas. Some of these falsehoods are discussed in a 2018 paper:
"Confronting Media and other Bias against Uranium Exploration and Mining, Nuclear Power, and Associated Environmental Issues"
There were anti-Clinton falsehoods circulating in political circles claiming that Russia owns 20% of America's uranium in the ground. That was patently false and was discussed in a 2017 paper addressing the issues:
"An Update: Nuclear Power and Uranium Markets, Ownership and Uranium One (Russian Government) and Other Ownership of Uranium Resources in the World"
The competition of nuclear power vs. natural gas, wind, and solar was discussed in a 2020 report:
"Beyond Hydrocarbons ... The Rest of the Story"
